2020 Interrobang Pinot Gris
The Interrobang Pinot Gris represents our second attempt at creating a wine that is more off the beaten path. We felt the name Interrobang matched that spirit well:
in·ter·ro·bang
/inˈterəˌbaNG/
noun
- a non-standard punctuation mark (‽) indicating a question expressed in an exclamatory manner, as in what are you doing‽.
Starting with gorgeous Pinot Gris grapes from Naches Heights Vineyard we let fermentation proceed using only ambient yeast. We did an extended maceration of 26 days on the skins to extract every bit of color, flavor and aroma. Following fermentation and extended maceration we aged the wine in 33% new and 67% neutral oak barrels for about 10 months before bottling. We modelled this wine after some of the classic skin macerated white wines from the northern Italian region of Fruili-Venezia Guilia and the adjacent Slovenian region of Goriška Brda but gave it our own Washington twist.
For those not familiar with skin macerated whites (AKA orange wines) this one may come as a bit of surprise when you smell and taste it. Expressive floral and spice notes on the nose lead to a bracing acidity, matched with a balanced tannin and flavors of dried orange peel, ripe white nectarine and golden delicious apple.
Bringing both bright acidity and a medium tannic body the Interrobang can lead to some very exciting and diverse food pairings. Japanese curry, paella, roasted poultry or Moroccan cuisine all suit this wine well.
